CCBP
Mission Statement: To provide required school supplies and backpacks to benefit students, families, and the local public school.
Goals/Objectives:
1. To support local students, parents, and teachers by providing quality school supplies.
2. To partner with the school, organizations, churches, events, public entities, businesses, and individuals in furnishing students and teachers with materials that encourage equitable education.
The Custer County Backpack Project (CCBP) is a nonprofit community service that provides backpacks filled with grade-level required school supplies free of charge to requesting parents.
CCBP began in 2016 as a service of the Valley Park, Recreation, and Youth Center (VPR&YC) organization. For the past five years, the Custer County church of Christ has provided oversight under VPR&YC as parent organization. 162 backpacks (54% of school enrollment) were distributed for the 2024-2025 school year and 131 backpacks (45% of school enrollment) were distributed for the 2025-2026 school year at an annual cost of $5,000+. CCBP also provided art sketchbooks and specialty paper to some teachers.
No other program helps the district so extensively with school materials. Because it is funded by donations by county citizens and solicited funds from grants, organizations, churches, and events, it is critical to have community involvement. Click to see a list of donors by year.
If any local church, organization, or event wants to cooperate in a community service project that benefits the education and future of this county, CCBP is an excellent opportunity.
